The following list includes style conventions used when writing about �Ը������� University and not covered in The Associated Press Stylebook.

capitalization of titles – University Style follows the composition titles entry in the AP Stylebook. Capitalize principal words, including verbs, prepositions and conjunctions, of four or more letters. Capitalize an article – the, a, an – or words of fewer than four letters if it is the first or last word in a title. See treatment of titles.

Carnegie Classification —  use this copy: �Ը������� University holds the esteemed distinction of being one of only seven institutions in Ohio to be recognized as an R1 top-tier research university by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. 

catalog — the preferred spelling ends with -log, not -logue.

centers and institutes — see under names of.

chairperson or chair — use chairperson or chair in references to heads of �Ը������� departments and committees. Exceptions may occur when referring historically to individuals who chaired departments or committees in the past when the traditional forms, chairman or chairwoman, were used. When referring to individuals outside �Ը�������, use their preferred titles.

Child Development Center — spell out in full and capitalize for the first reference; use center for subsequent references.

Cleveland Foot & Ankle Clinic — use this form.

cocurricular — no hyphen.

College of Business —use Ambassador Crawford College of Business and Entrepreneurship; second reference: Ambassador Crawford College or the college.

Commas — do not use a comma before the conjunction in a simple series, commonly known as a serial or Oxford comma (e.g., “blue, gold and white”). A comma may be added only when needed for clarity.

�Ը������� University offers programs in business, education and nursing.

The music wing contains classrooms, rehearsal spaces for various bands and ensembles, and faculty studios.

Commencement — always capitalize when referring to the �Ը������� University event.

On May 13, 2017, �Ը������� University observed its 256th Commencement.

The custom of wearing robes at commencement exercises dates back to the 11th century.

Convocation — always capitalize when referring to the �Ը������� University event.

Each fall, the �Ը������� University Convocation is held to welcome new first-year students.

A convocation is an assemblage or calling together.

course listings — list by the complete title of the course. Always capitalize and DO NOT use quotation marks. 

Introduction to Cultural Anthropology

coursework — one word.

credit hours — use numerals; 3-credit-hour course; 3 credits are needed for graduation.

Deans Council — no apostrophe.

Dean’s List — always capitalize and use the apostrophe.

degrees — see academic degrees. 

departments — see names of.

Design Innovation (DI) Hub — use this form on first reference; use DI Hub on second reference. Note “Hub” is not in all capital letters.

Design Innovation (DI) Initiative — use this form on first reference; use DI on second reference. Note “Initiative” is not used on second reference.

Distinguished Teaching Award — see �Ը������� University Alumni Association Distinguished Teaching Award.

Divisions — see names of.

dual degree programs — use this form; no hyphen.
