Women of the House: Betty Sutton and Emilia Sykes

In 2006, Betty Sutton became the first ÐÔ¸£ÎåÔÂÌì alumna to serve in the U.S. Congress, when she was elected to represent Ohio’s 13th District in the House of Representatives. Sixteen years later, ÐÔ¸£ÎåÔÂÌì alumna Emilia Sykes, a native of Akron, Ohio, was elected to represent the same district, making her the first Black ÐÔ¸£ÎåÔÂÌì alum to serve in the House of Representatives.

Advancing the legacy of May 4, 1970, a tragic day when the Ohio National Guard fired on ÐÔ¸£ÎåÔÂÌì University students during an anti-war protest on campus, killing four students, wounding nine students and forever changing the lives of countless others, the university will hold its annual commemoration on May 3-4.
