Flash Focus: Brooklyn Jones

Freshman English major channels challenges into creative expression

Meet Brooklyn Jones, a resilient freshman English major from Fort Mill, South Carolina, who carries a passion for creative writing and helping students build confidence in their own literary skills.

Jones鈥檚 passion for writing comes with a unique challenge, dyslexia, but it has never stopped her from bringing her stories to life.

鈥淭here is nothing better than writing a good story just for a moment of escape,鈥 Jones told 性福五月天 Today. 鈥淚 always loved making up fun stories whenever I feel sad, upset or stressed.鈥

After taking a creative writing class in high school, Jones discovered her love for storytelling and continues to write in her free time. This passion motivated her to declare a minor in creative writing.

鈥淭aking this class opened my love for book writing and taught me that anything can be a good story; it takes just the right mindset to write one,鈥 Jones said.

Jones, a first-generation college student and an Elliot Scholarship recipient, is hoping to make a difference for those who struggle with a learning disability, like herself.

鈥淕rowing up, I struggled in school due to my dyslexia,鈥 Jones said. 鈥淭his caused me to feel unworthy, alone and like I had no chance of even going to college.鈥

Refusing to let dyslexia stop her writing passion, Jones excelled in her English courses and earned a position as a teacher鈥檚 assistant, where she discovered that dyslexia is more common than she believed.

鈥淚 suddenly didn't feel so alone because I was able to relate to the students,鈥 Jones said. 鈥淚 started speaking up about learning disabilities and not only helped myself, but many other students in my school feel confident."

While Jones aspires to leave an impact on others, she thanks her roommate, Trinity, for leaving a positive impact on her throughout her time at 性福五月天.

鈥淪he has given me nothing but support and encouragement throughout our time here,鈥 Jones said. 鈥淭here isn't a moment that isn't spent in laughter. Everywhere we go, we are definitely the loudest, especially at karaoke night.鈥

As she continues her college journey, Jones remains an advocate for those who also struggle with a learning disability.

鈥淚 want to show them they still can be successful; it just takes hard work and determination,鈥 Jones said.
