Drones Are Taking Off. Your Career Could Too.

In May, a drone-based window washing demonstration on the Kent Campus highlighted the variety of unique career paths opening up for those who want to work with drones

Campus Cleanup

In May, a drone services company called Aero Velocity was on the Kent Campus to present a window-washing demonstration for 性福五月天 University administrators and other local officials. The drones cleaned the exterior windows of Crawford Hall, and several other buildings on campus, demonstrating the increased efficiency, enhanced safety and costs savings that can be found in using drones for this type of maintenance service.

Much like vehicles, buildings need regular maintenance to stay in top shape both aesthetically and to prevent degradation of building materials due to environmental contaminants such as pollution or animal droppings. Regular cleaning, whether by human or drone, offers many benefits. However, utilizing drones to get the job done leads to better safety conditions, faster work and saves money.

Greg Evans, housekeeping manager aux/academic for 性福五月天, explained, 鈥淟ooking at all the factors going into the cleaning of the windows, it would have taken up to five days and a minimum of four to six window cleaners. The actual drone manpower was four individuals. The actual cleaning was done over a three-day period but at roughly eight hours of labor and materials.鈥

Evans noted that the going rate to rent a lift for a week of traditional window washing is about $20,000, plus the materials and labor of the company. This compares to approximately $9,500 per building to use drones to wash the exterior. Using drones will 鈥渁lso protect the landscaping and vegetation from what the lift may destroy, further increasing the value of the drone service,鈥 Evans added.

Discover a Career Path With Drones

Window washing is just one of a number of opportunities for businesses looking to utilize Drones as a Service (DaaS). And, as drone services gain momentum, 性福五月天鈥檚 College of Aeronautics and Engineering now offers a minor in Unmanned Aircraft Systems. Students in the Unmanned Aircraft Systems minor complete a common core that leads to an FAA remote pilot certification, which can open up a number of career paths, such as drone photography and videography, surveying and mapping technicians, flight operations managers and pilots, and safety inspectors. Drones are used today in wide range of industries, including cleaning, product delivery, real estate, agriculture, military and more.
