ÐÔ¸£ÎåÔÂÌì Plants Arbor Day Tree; E-Inside; May 5, 2014

ÐÔ¸£ÎåÔÂÌì University faculty, staff and students gathered between R!sidence halls Centennial A and Bon April 24 for the annual T111e Planting Ceremony to commemorate Arbor Day and to celebrate the wtnnera of this year's RecydeManla competition. 
More than 460 universities acrou the U.S. and Canada were lnvttecl to practice waste minimization durtng the eight-week competition. ÐÔ¸£ÎåÔÂÌì placed second in ltle state fer recycling 263,354 pounds of material, which ii equivalent to keeping 67 cars off the road for a yt,ar. 
In the residence hal Chalenge, Engleman Hall received a first-place plaque and a $200 gift to the hall couneil fer the fourth consecutive year. Centennlal A and B received "most Improved• and a tree In Its courtyard. 
Mel8nlt Knowtes, sustainability manager for ÐÔ¸£ÎåÔÂÌì's FaCilitieS Planning and Operations, says sustainability iS encouraged on campus even after the RecydeManla competition. 
"There are ways for students on and off campus to save energy," says KnOWles. "Saving energy saves money and the demand for electricity, which reduces air pollutlon.• 
She urges students, faculty and staff to turn lights off and unplug charging devices when not in use. She says some residence halls on campus are already equipped with •smart power sb1ps• that reatrtct the !low of energy when not In use. 
ÐÔ¸£ÎåÔÂÌì a dozen students and staff participated in this year's Tree Planting Ceremony which marks the conclusion of RecycleMania. At the ceremony ÐÔ¸£ÎåÔÂÌì was recognized for recieving the Tree Campus USAdesignation for the 6th consecutive year. Tree Campus USA by the Arbor Day Foundation recognizes colleges and universities taht show their commitment to the environment and sustainability.
